The Dumpster Diver
Curious to what Dane Reynolds has been tearing apart Trestles’ open faces on during the Hurley Pro? Wait no longer… Read on!
So Danes been seen ripping it up on a little stubby wide real basic design 5-7 1 /2 19 1/2 2 3/8 flyer type thingy throughout trestles. Here’s the skinny ! We shaped a short stubby square tail for Dane to ride in Mexico on his quiksilver photo trip with Kelly and Julian about two weeks ago .It was nicknamed Dumpster Diver because we literally had to wrestle the garbage man for the old yellow square block of eps foam that we were about to toss. This board was shaped out of that raw blank of foam by hand. The machine was down that day so or we would of cut a stubby version of the flyer on it to achieve basically the same concept but had no choice but to do it this way.

He came back from his trip saying that all he rode rode was this board , (the Dumpster Diver) and didn’t even try any of his shortboards .He had a blast on those mushy days , but there was a few things he wanted to change to make it better . These changes needed to be made if he was to use it at the Hurley Pro at Trestles . it was also to dinged up from six hour sessions , he had completely beat down the deck where the ¾ patch ended from landing airs. ( check photo of him and the huge heal marks .. ouch! Though it was extremely fast he said It caught a bit of edge on cutbacks , he also wanted to narrow up the nose and pull in the tail a bit to resemble a normal shorty. The second generation dumpster diver II , has these updated changes and was dropped off to Dane the night before the event started . He rode it for the first time in his heat last Sunday and , won the expression session on it Tuesday. Not sure if its anywhere near completed as I’m sure there is plenty more direction from Dane to come , but damn he looks like he is having fun on it to me. More to come…
Check out what Dane has to say about the board on Hurley’s site.

Duuude , dane has been ripping , he lands like every air he does and some , and how are those tight round ouse cutty carve things, I like reading about his boards way more than taylor knoxs exercises on surfline!!
17 Sep 09 at 4:47 pm #Seriously , did you see those heal marks in his board ,he must of been boosting. That board is sick but I just want one of danes super long billed hats that he wears in his post heat interviews , they are all flat like he sat on it for a week. How do I get one quik?
17 Sep 09 at 4:52 pm #Very nice article and super interesting board.
I’ve recently tried a board shaped by Lee Stacey (AUS) that was about those dimensions. The nose was more round though. It was a lot of fun.
I feel that we might see that board in the 2010 CIS catalog!
Good luck to Dane for the rest of the Trestles contest!

17 Sep 09 at 9:58 pm #Holy moly, what’s up with the board on the bottom right? That would be an interesting ride, but would really love to try Dane’s Dumpster Diver, wondering how it compares to the 5′8″ fish I’ve been riding.
19 Sep 09 at 8:47 pm #wherer do i get one haha
21 Sep 09 at 6:21 pm #i need one same dimensions , same everything that board is sick…. whats up with the team trade ins ????
23 Sep 09 at 2:48 am #just saw Julian Wilson ripping on a CI in France, is it one of these or a more standard shape?
23 Sep 09 at 12:06 pm #If Julian rides CI he could won the event!
What’s the deal with the rail patches on the tail. Is that carbon fiber? And is the artwork covering the carbon fiber patches on the first batch? Thanks again, the boards look insane!
23 Sep 09 at 4:24 pm #Yes some of Danes boards do have carbon fiber to keep the denting and breakage in the tail/rear rail area stronger . But the patches with graphics or art is a different project. Thomas Cambell made a print for Dane personally and that is imprinted on the fiberglass through a large format printer . It provides essentially an extra layer of fiberglass over the area which gets heavily abused , as well as throws a bit of artistic flare in the mix. These tail and rail patches will be on some of our lighter weight stock boards soon.
24 Sep 09 at 2:35 pm #The MTF he rode in France looks nuts, is it the same as the MTFs from the 90’s??
26 Sep 09 at 7:11 pm #What kind of concave is going on with the bottom of this? would love to try it!
18 Oct 09 at 12:16 pm #dane, how come you never ride a performance quad that’s slightly shorter and slightly thicker than your normal thruster?

19 Jan 10 at 2:41 pm #The new glass technology used in the tail to reinforce the board is excellent stuff, however is hard to work with and impossible to match the seams. Board builders are using pinstripes, coats of paint, and other type artwork like above to hide the seams.
19 Feb 10 at 2:48 pm #Hello everyone I am amazed at the shape of this board, I love to see Dane surfing with it. I am currently creating my own boards at home and would like to try to make an equal, someone has the measurements

27 Apr 10 at 12:14 pm #Bought the board used at HSS before my trip to Fiji. I thought it was going to be a bit small at 5′6″ but it was basically the only thing I rode. They say it is for small mushy summer surf, but I surfed in overhead super fun waves and had a total blast. I love this board, just make sure you paddle a little harder and get your feet planted where they need to be. With 5′6″ there is no room for error.
29 Apr 10 at 10:38 pm #I didn’t realize this board is so popular! I thought these were only custom order boards, but I guess this has changed? The guys over at Surf Ride have a ton of Dumpster Divers on their site… like 50! Did they order these or are you starting to add these to your stock list?
