Kelly Slater tests out 6 new boards before jumping on a flight to Australia- Whip (mismarked as a Flyer), Wizard Sleeve, Dumpster Diver, The Chunnel, Tangents. He sounds pretty confident with the first board he tests-  a new 5′9” Whip with a concaved deck (also photographed as the board second to the left). Kelly also talks briefly about The Chunnel. The Chunnel has definitely inspired some new thinking and there is some interesting debates going on on the comment board.

    nice to see some inside looks at CI testing new equipment.
    I wonder how many designs never make it to the shops that would be so fun
    VERY cool

    Since you guys are experimenting on board shapes what about construction? Any chance CI will ever take on firewire technology. Some other brands are doing it.

    @Michael Novido

    Firewire fail bro that would be the worst thing for CI i to do firewire is one of the most boring board makes out there their range is limited.
    i have had 2 firewires first one delamed in 5 months second one said to be there best seller was horriable to ride.
    i think what kelly is doing with flex is much more practical and alows better control over flex. I did like the idea behind firewire but i have heard to many storys of there boards breaking or delaming i think they still have work to do on their construction process. maybe making the boards in thailand is part of the problem. my understanding is the Eps Foam needs to be dry before glassing if there is water that will cause delam…something i know a bit about with regards to firewires as it took a month to dry mine out!

    I still think that being said that CI still have a better range of shapes that will suit more surfers as well as these experimental boards.
