Kelly Slater's Semi Pro Model for the US Open of Surfing 2010

Dimensions: 5′9″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4″

Kelly Slater has been riding his Semi Pro squash tail – it’s an experimental board he has been working on and is still in the process of refining. He’s been testing this board throughout the Summer months in Central America and debuted at J Bay but as a roundtail. It’s a cross between the Proton and the Tangent. The name, Semi Pro, is an inside joke between Kelly and Dane…

This is the Black Flag Whip with a half moon tail but now featuring a triplane hull bottom which adds lift – thus creating a very fast and loose board. A Concave deck gets his feet closed to the water line and graphite strips which stop right at the back fins gives it a springy feel.

A lot of people have been curious about what Dane Reynolds has been riding at this year’s US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. What is he riding exactly? Well, actually it is a pretty standard shortboard. It’s the Rookie model to be exact. However, it has a “chopped tail” – about an inch of so of the tail is cut off, giving it a very square edge. This gives the board a wider surface area in the tail and allows Dane to glide over the flatter sections of Huntington Beach.

  2. 6′1″ x 18 5/8″ x 2 5/16″ Proton squash tail nicknamed “hit and run”
  3. 6′1″ x 18 5/8″ x 2 3/8″ MBB3 squash tail nicknamed “Red Dawn”. This is an updated reworked version of a board Shane Beshen used to love. It was also a favorite of power surfer Luke Egan back in the day. Dane says the board carries a lot of speed, especially out of bottom turns.
  4. 5′8″ x 18 1/2″ x 2 5/16″ square tail nicknamed “Chopped vbb3 souey”. For some reason, the blank came in with a 1/4″ stringer so Dane thought sawing the tail off the blank into a 5′8″ (originally 6′1″) might be the way to go. He got busy with the saw and this is the result.
  5. 6′0″ 18 5/8″ x 2 5/16″ Rookie squash tail. Nicknamed “Square Back Attack”.

Kelly Slater stands above his quiver for Jbay, called the "Semi-Pro"Kelly Slater stands above his quiver for Jbay, called the "Semi-Pro"

Kelly stands above the first batch of new boards he has been working on, called the Semi-Pro(The name was inspired by a story Dane Reynolds told to him in Brazil this year which will probably leak out later). Although he is still working on this model, it is in essence a marriage between Dane’s Proton and Kelly’s model, The Tangent. Kelly will be debuting this board most likely in a rounded pin tail at J Bay this week. So far he has been riding them around 5′9″ to 5′10″ approximately 18 1/4″ to 18 3/8″ and 2 1/4″ with a concave deck and tri and quad fin options. Will have to wait and see how they go for him but, from the footage I saw of him testing them in South America, he is on point with his new board direction for this style of wave. Of course he has some 5′1″1 Tangents in his quiver, similiar to what he has one in the past.

Dane Reynolds contemplates his quiver for for J Bay.

After several magazine and board testing trips to South America, most of his boards were pretty beat up. We put together a brand new quiver for Dane prior to his J Bay departure. This is Dane contemplating his quiver for the long fast walls of J Bay.
