Nat Young stormed into round one of Innersection with his electro-driven part that’s got people talking bout two things: his surfing and his music choice. We caught up with him to find out how he went about building the two-minute section.

SURFING Magazine: How did you hear about innersection.tv?

Nat Young: Just from people taking about it saying, “are you gonna put a part together for that new Taylor Steele video?”

How did you approach making your clip?

When I got home from Australia about a month ago me and Ryan [Moss] decided to put something together, we pretty much started from scratch, but we realized it would be a good opportunity for both of us.

And it is time for quarter final three. Dane Reynolds in white versus Joel Parkinson in red. Even though some clouds drifted in when Mick lost, it is so totally sunny again. The tide is all the way out and the surf is firing. Big blue and green and white dusted with sand barrels. Gorgeous women and a handful of handsome men wander to water’s edge. Snapper Rock is a nice place to watch people surf. Brazilians flash their backsides.

I had talked to Channel Island’s Travis Lee about Dane’s boards earlier in the blah blah part of the day. He told me that Dane had been riding a 6’1 18 ½ 2 ¼ Proton nicknamed the Taxidriver a lot. It had cracked on the rail where Dane puts his back foot and they had kept getting it repaired because Dane loves. “Protons have a lot of bend and work really good in a lower tide” Travis had said. The tide is so low right now!

Dane wastes no time in catching his first wave. It is a perfect wall and he tears it to shreds. He is so loose on land and so angry in the water! Like a drunk man beating a bad wife. He violates every ounce of salty water he can. He smashes the lip and sets his fins free. He bottom turns and smashes again. So much smashing! He gets a 9.27 and the full decks of people can’t help but hoot and cheer. Joel is hometown hero, but my goodness. Did you see that?

Today, several years removed from the hectic, whirlwind life on the ASP world tour, Ventura’s Timmy Curran is in a much different place. He spends most of his sessions in the water at home, bouncing around between the multitude of world-class beachbreaks and world-class pointsbreaks that he grew up on. Unexpectedly, he’s now championing a fairly successful music career, which helps keep the creative palette moist. But most of all, he’s now a proud papa, which as any father can attest to, changes everything. ESPN Surfing caught up with the back-flipping maestro at home, enjoying all that’s good about his golden years.

The joys of fatherhood, a full- blown music career, and your pro surfing gig, are you enjoying life off tour?
Well having a daughter has been the biggest blessing. We are so thankful, and knew that we would just have to make it work. It gets hard if I’m on a trip, especially anything over a few days. It all comes down to having an amazing wife that is able to pull it off when I’m gone. She’s the best.
